This NRA Shotgun Instructor Course has been reduced to one day. All instructor candidates must have completed the Basic Instructor Training (known as the “BIT”) which covers the NRA policies and procedures prior to enrolling. The instructor candidates will explore the various types of shotgun actions (hinge, pump, semi-autos) and shotshells (birdshot, buckshot, shotslugs). Then, in the classroom, the instructor candidates will practice the fundamentals of shotgun shooting, practicing the technique of teaching the “swing-through” method of lead.

In the afternoon, the instructor candidates will go out to a skeet field and, starting with position seven, employ the “coach-pupil” teaching method and learn how to get their fellow instructors to hit the target with increasing difficulty. In the final discussion, the instructor candidates will evaluate the various tips they gained from each other and come to a consensus regarding the most effective coaching techniques.
